10-11th June 2015 | Hotel Equatorial, Penang Malaysia
Malaysian Society of Anaesthesiologist and College of Anaesthesiologist ASM 2015 And 13th ASPA Congress
This is the follow up of the inaugural workshop held in Singapore on December 6th 2014The objectives of the above workshop:
- Standardise the contents
- Further fine-tune the contents
- Train the trainers
There were 40 participants, from Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, and Singapore. All initial instructors came to Penang to assist in further fine-tuning the program. It composed of equipping talks, interactive case discussions and skills stations. Participants were broken into small groups and rotated through the interactive case and skills stations. All stations were interactive and active “hands-on”.
The final station was “Breaking bad news” and participants were chosen to demonstrate breaking bad news; Tolga (surgeon) and Serpil (“trainee” anaesthetist thrown into the hot fire) and Suan Ling (distressed mum) and Joey (upset but cool dad). The “victims” were entirely spontaneous. Feedback was elicited from both participants in “role” and observing.
The workshop ended with a MCQ of 20 questions were done as a group and feedback given to improve the quality of the questions.
Comments during wrap up concluded that:
- Write-ups will retain the original “long” scripts but will include a short one to two page summary
- Slides will be standardised to one format
- Content of slides should be practical
- Scientific evidence and “fussy tables” can be given in the write-ups.
- Slides will be pooled to form common resource for all trainers
- Slides will be uploaded on the website, password protected for trainers
- All personal data and patients’ images (no consent) should be removed
- Please “craft” tables, flow charts and drawings. Content taken from publications and text-books are copyrighted
- Advanced airway workshops may be omitted
- Advanced airway workshops are already commonly conducted in conferences
- It will not always be possible to replicate such stations as not all instructors have access to such equipment nor the instructors have the expertise to conduct the station.
- USG intravenous access station may be omitted.
- Not all instructors have access to USG machines to bring to workshop
- Instructors confident in teaching USG IV access may not be available
