Lao Friends Hospital for Children, Luang Prabang, Lao PDR
Lao Friends Hospital for Children, sister hospital of Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) in Siem Reap by the organisation Friends without a Border, invited ASPA to run a Safe PAN workshop.
Unlike AHC which opened in 1999, Lao Friends Hospital started only in February 2015. Plans are for the operating theatres to start in latter part of 2016. Paediatric surgery is presently done in the Government General Hospital which is located in the same grounds as Lao Friends Hospital for Children. However the pre-operative and post-operative care is provided by the staff in the Hospital for Children.
On arrival we found the future group of nurse anaesthetists have been rotated out for training in various Asian countries. None of the participants were going to be involved in the anaesthesia. ASPA team had to omit the specialized anaesthetic topics and concentrated instead on preoperative and postoperative management.
Fortunately the hospital director Dr Cheri Njissen-Jordan had forewarned us that team were fresh graduates and many were still learning the English Language.
The Safe PAN program already had minimal didactic lectures and concentrated on small group teaching for most topics, with the participants being exposed to as little change in accents i.e. stayed with the same instructors, in the first day, so that they need not be adjusting to different accents
Feedback from Cheri was that the participants like the small group teaching and the topics were relevant.
The slides unfortunately were still too difficult in language and content. However the Hospital appreciated our efforts and noted that ASPA team clearly loved what we did.
