ASPA ran the first Safe Anaesthesia in Children workshop, organised by Dr Rizana Ghafoor, and hosted by the Maldives Anaesthesiologists Association.
The faculty included ASPA members; Rebecca Jacobs, Dilip Pawar, Ekta Rai, Josephine Tan, Lim Suan Ling and Agnes Ng
It was a two day workshop. There were short talks focusing on practical aspects of anaesthesia management of children. Participants were divided into small groups and participated in interactive clinical case discussions and engaged in “hands on” stations; airway, CPR and recognition and management of arrhythmias.
The participants included 16 doctors and 30 nurses. 2 of the doctors were ER junior medical officers; 2 were paediatricians; the rest were anaesthetists who practice all branches of anaesthesia.
The nurses were from the Intensive Care Unit (15) and theatre (15). As the nurses could only come in the afternoon due to manpower constraints, selected topics and skill stations were repeated on the second day for nurses only.
Participation was good and the feedback received was as excellent. Due to various reasons CMEs such as workshops are done infrequently in the hospitals in Maldives.
